Oscar Group, one of the most established private sector organizations in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), was founded in the 1950s by the late businessman Erdem Oskar (1935–2024).
This commercial journey, which began in the village of Evdim (Avdimou) in Limassol, has evolved into a multi-sector conglomerate spanning industries from tourism and automotive to agriculture and energy.
⏳ Historical Development Process
1950s (Founding and Early Challenges):
Erdem Oskar embarked on his first business ventures at a young age. Following a bankruptcy in his initial partnership, he began offering car rental services in 1958 with just a single vehicle.
The 1974 Turning Point:
The rental business, which started with one vehicle in 1958, had grown to a fleet of 74 vehicles by 1974. During the 1974 Cyprus Peace Operation, the company left its entire fleet and assets in the south; it then relocated to Northern Cyprus and rebuilt its operations from scratch.
1980s – 1990s (Growth in Tourism):
A significant step was taken into the hospitality sector. The group’s flagship property, Oscar Resort Hotel, opened in Kyrenia (Girne). This was followed by the addition of Bellapais Monastery Village (1995/1996) and other hotel-resort investments to the portfolio. The car rental fleet was once again expanded to become one of the largest networks on the island.
2000 – 2015 (Brand Diversification and Famagusta Investment):
The Vuni Palace Hotel was launched in the luxury accommodation segment.
Thematic and region-specific facilities, such as the Oscar Park Hotel—situated right next to the ancient city in the Famagusta (Gazimağusa) region—were opened. 2018 – 2020 (Automotive, Energy, and Manufacturing):
With the opening of a massive showroom in Çatalköy in 2018, the company assumed the TRNC distributorship for Chinese automotive giants BAIC, DFSK, and Landwind.
Investments in renewable energy (solar power plants) were implemented.
In 2020, the company entered the agriculture and food production sector by establishing the Hasan Efendi Olive Oil Factory in Çatalköy, guided by the philosophy: “If you earn on this island, you must invest on this island.”
2024 – Present (Corporate Succession):
Following the passing of the company’s founder, Erdem Oskar, the holding continues to grow while maintaining its corporate structure under the leadership of family members and professional executives.

Key Success Factors and Strategic Assessment
Vertical Integration Model: Consolidating hotel operations, car rentals, food/water production, and energy infrastructure under a single group umbrella reduces operational costs while boosting customer loyalty.
Crisis Resilience:
The Group’s ability to rebuild from scratch after losing all its assets in 1974 demonstrates its flexible capital structure and crisis management capabilities.
Market Diversification:
Spreading revenue streams beyond tourism into sectors such as automotive distribution, agricultural production, and energy provides a buffer against economic fluctuations.
🏛️ Historical Turning Points and Crisis Management
1958 (Episkopi Origins):
Erdem Oskar (1935–2024) launched his first commercial venture in the Episkopi region near Limassol. Anticipating the transportation needs of both the British military bases on the island and the local population, he laid the foundations for Oscar Rent A Car.
The 1974 Breakpoint:
Having built a fleet of 74 vehicles prior to 1974, the company was forced to leave all its tangible assets in the south following the Peace Operation. After relocating to the North, the family restructured its business model with Kyrenia as its base.
Capital Accumulation:
Cash flow generated from car rental operations was channeled directly into real estate and tourism land investments. This move established the equity foundation for the group’s expansion into the hotel industry during the post-1980 period.
🏨 Tourism Portfolio and Concept Differentiation
Rather than adopting a uniform approach to hospitality, the Oscar Group developed concepts within the tourism sector tailored to distinct customer segments:
Oscar Resort Hotel (Kyrenia):
The Group’s flagship property. It targets mass tourism—catering to families and large groups—with features such as a private beach protected by a breakwater, wave pools, and an integrated catamaran marina.
Vuni Palace Hotel (Kyrenia):
A 5-star facility focusing on luxury accommodation, a casino, and an upscale clientele.
Bellapais Monastery Village (Kyrenia – 2002/2003):
An adults-only accommodation concept situated in the foothills, emphasizing tranquility, nature, and scenic views.
Oscar Park Hotel (Famagusta / Yeni Boğaziçi – 2016):
A 58-room, culture- and nature-focused boutique resort situated adjacent to the ancient city of Salamis. Following a decision to undergo a major transformation starting in 2025, the facility was converted into an inpatient physical therapy center to contribute to health tourism within the group. Operating under the name “Romatem Move Cyprus” as part of the group, and through collaborations with local hospitals across the island, it contributes to both the tourism sector and the economy.
⚙️ Business Model and Vertical Integration Strategy
The Group’s financial and operational sustainability relies on its self-reinforcing ecosystem:

(Hasan Efendi)
Logistics Integration:
Oscar Rent A Car—one of the island’s oldest car rental companies, boasting a fleet of over 350 vehicles—directly manages the transportation network for tourists staying at the hotels.
Cost Optimization (Food & Energy):
The Hasan Efendi Olive Oil Factory established in Çatalköy and investments in renewable solar energy (SPP) aim to reduce the hotels’ operational input costs.
Automotive Retail:
The distributorships for BAIC, DFSK, and Landwind, launched in 2018, offer the opportunity to renew the fleet cost-effectively while also capturing a share of the commercial and passenger vehicle market.
